Programs & heritage
Every programme is run by volunteers and funded by membership fees, grants and concert income — reinvested entirely in folk culture.
Weekly ensemble evenings and beginner courses for fiddle, kantele, accordion, guitar and bass. Tunes are taught by ear in the traditional manner, with notation available for those who want it. Players under 18 attend free of charge.
Seasonal weekend masterclasses with recognised Finnish folk musicians focusing on regional styles, ornamentation and the art of playing for dancers.
Recording, transcribing and cataloguing tunes, songs and stories from Savonian tradition-bearers, so that local repertoire is safeguarded and made freely available for learning.
Our ensemble SawoFolk performs at village celebrations, summer stages and national festivals. Concerts are kept free or low-cost so that folk music remains accessible to all.
Music visits to schools, libraries and care homes; support for village associations organising traditional dances; and mentoring for young musicians starting their own groups.
